Beverly Sher Deutsch

Age: 80

SERVICES: A service for Beverly was held on Sunday, April 1, in Sun City, attended by her immediate family, friends and relatives. Memorial contributions can be made in her name to The Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, Ill. 60601-7633.

Beverly Sher Deutsch, 80, formerly of Virginia and Sun City, Ariz., passed away on March 28, 2007, in Framingham, Mass.

She is survived by daughters Elayne Chiat (Larry) of Golden Valley, Minn., and Marilyn Machkowsky (Les) of Framingham, Mass., and son Ben Deutsch (Karen) of Dunwoody, Ga. She was preceded in death by her husband, David; her son, William; and her parents, Follie and Bessie Sher. Beverly was a loving grandmother to six grandchildren, Abby and Daniel Chiat, Rachel and Sara Machkowsky and Aaron and Emily Deutsch.

Beverly was born July 19, 1926, in Chicago, Ill., and grew up in Superior, Wis. She graduated from The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth with a degree in social work. She married David in 1948, and their loved affair flourished for 57 beautiful years.

Beverly brought hours of enjoyment to thousands of people with her generous smile and beautiful voice. She had a career that spanned singing with the Duluth and Minneapolis pop orchestras and performing as a soloist with the East Range Choral Society. Beverly contributed her talents to numerous area musicals and was especially active in the Northern Lights players, where she played leading roles in musicals such as “Kiss Me Kate’’ and “Guys and Dolls.’’ Her children were blessed to have her sing at their weddings.

She was a voice instructor at Mesabi Community College and also taught private singing and voice training. She served as a critique judge for the Miss Minnesota Country Music Pageant, the Dodge/Wrangler Country Music Roundup and the Project Democracy competition.

Beverly served as the Iron Range representative for the New York Metropolitan Opera Comapny, and for years her efforts provided the opportunity for hundreds of people from across the Iron Range to experience the color and grandeur of the opera.

A recipient of the Iron Range Historical Society Cultural Award, Beverly had a love affair with her community. She volunteered her time and abilities to entertain groups at such places as the Arrowhead Nursing Home, the Lakeview Residence and the Virginia Hospital. She involved herself in Wednesday Musicale, where she gave concerts and sang for many charity affairs. She was an active member and officer of the Order of Eastern Star and actively participated in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Hadassah, Minnesota Jewish Historical Society and the American Association of Retarded Citizens. She was a proud member of the B’nai Abraham Synagogue in Virginia, where she was a Sunday School teacher and youth group adviser.

Beverly was a wonderful wife, loving mother and caring grandmother, who will be forever remembered for her warm smile, great sense of humor and vivacious energy for life.
